After cutting me off
The woman in the white Jetta
Puts on makeup, sprays her hair
Chain-smokes two cigarettes
Throws the smoking stubs to the street
There’s a serenade of
Car, truck and bus horns
As four lanes merge to two
A frustrated driver prominently displays
Her middle finger
To the van, not letting her in line
Then politely mouths “thank you” to me for
Letting her in
The red SUV, blares music
The driver uses his steering wheel as a make-shift drum
Creeping toward the mouth of the
Holland Tunnel,
I think of Dante’s Inferno,
His various levels of Hell
Swallowing the endless stream of
Disappearing taillights
Where are we going?
